Etymology

From Old English. In a document of 680 AD, it is referred to as Bucgan ora, "Bucge's shore". The Regis (from Latin rex (“king”)) was added after King George V stayed there to convalesce. Bucgan can be derived from 'Bucca' which means a 'male goat' hence the 'goat shore', as most Saxon village names describe what the place did or produced.
