Etymology

A neologism coined by Joseph Henriet, a word meaning "mountaineer" or "shepherd" deliberately chosen to "sound like Occitan," based on a local derivative of Latin Alpes (“the Alps, mountain highlands”). Aligned with Franco-Provençal arpetan, New Latin arpitanus. Also see Arpitania and Franco-Provençal.
