Etymology

Borrowed from Tamil அணைக்கட்டு (aṇaikkaṭṭu, “dam for regulating the flow of an irrigation channel”), from அணை (aṇai) + கட்டு (kaṭṭu). Also compare Kannada ಅಣೆಕಟ್ಟು (aṇekaṭṭu) with the same construction.
