  1. A neurosurgical procedure in which the amygdala and hippocampus, structures in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, are surgically removed. Most commonly performed to treat drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy with the goal of reducing or stopping seizure activity originating from that region.
