From Latin Adriāticum, variant of Hadriātricum, from Hadria, ultimately from either: * an Etruscan settlement at the northern shore of the Adriatic Sea. * Illyrian *adur, from Proto-Indo-European *wódr̥ (“water”), related to Proto-Albanian *udrijā, or from Venetic [script needed] (adur, “water”), in either case related to Latin unda and Ancient Greek ὕδωρ (húdōr), more at water.
